Getting What You Want verus Getting What You Need!

Remember the Rolling Stones song? Mick told us you don’t always get what you want but you get what you need.

This week I am in Pennsylvania visiting my best friend and a few of my cousins. Susie and I have been “crazed” NHL hockey fans for years. When I lived in Pa. we had an annual trek to Flyers camp. Today we were to go to the Skate Zone to watch those Philadelphia Flyers. We have SO MUCH fun doing this! As luck would have it, Susie woke up this morning feeling very ill and needs to see a doctor (believe me she has to be ill to miss her Flyers). So our adventure for today is canceled.

I admit to being disappointed because I am not getting what I wanted, but in a strange way I am getting what I need. I am spending the day following up on telephone calls and emails from clients and prospects. I also will be working on some presentations since I have three speaking engagements coming up in the near future.

It is funny how things happen. I was toying with the idea of this trip for a while, going back and forth on the value of some relaxation versus working on my business. It is a tough road when you are running a new business. There never seems to be enough time to get it all done and take it to the next level. On the other hand, Susie and I are both crazy about hockey and since I relocated to Tampa, these opportunities to enjoy fun times with Susie don’t happen that often these days.

The point is technology keeps me connected to Tampa Bay and I get unexpected time to get some work done. Now I feel less guilty about taking time off for relaxation and hopefully, the adventure resumes tomorrow when we are scheduled to head to Pittsburgh to see the Penguins later this week. For today, I got what I need.

Let’s GO PENS!!
